August 2008 News Letter
A
BRIEF UPDATE FROM THE RIVERS AND OUR ONLY REAL
LAKE
With
our AGM fast approaching I thought it was time I put
pen to paper again. I have acted as the clubs River
Bailiff for the past 12 months, since being appointed
at our last AGM.
RIVER
ELWY
The
overhanging vegetation has been cleared and most of
the submerged logs/branches removed from the main
pools on the Nant Mawr beat. There is still some work
to do and this will either be carried out before the
end of this season or the start of the next. The
river is fishing well at the moment and since
June/July the Cock-y-Bondhu has proved successful for
resident brown tout. I have only tried fishing for
sea trout once this season. This was without success
and I put this down to high water levels and my
dislike of worming. At least you can fish a fly at
night since all the pruning work has been undertaken.
I have
not fished the Gypsy Lane or Roe Park beats, although
I have walked them on occasion as part of the
Clwyd/Elwy Riverwatch initiative.
RIVER
CLEDWEN
This
river tends to fish well when the water levels are up
and it is slightly coloured. I had my first sea trout
of the season in broad daylight on a nymph. This was
only relatively small so it was released to fight
another day. I then switched to a butcher and hooked
and lost two further sea trout. The last was
disappointing as it was lost at the net and I estimate
that it weighed between 2 and 3 pounds. All very
exciting on a 3/4~# rod on a little river.
RIVER
CLWYD
This
river was fishing well earlier in the season. Now
that the river has started to stabilise after last
yearfs substantial bank work it is wadable in places.
This makes dry fly fishing easier and success was had
with a Greenwells Glory. Care still has to be taken
when getting down to the waters edge, although it is
evident that a lot of members have been fishing by the
trampled section by the main pools. I have not fished
this beat for salmon or sea trout yet this season.
RIVER
CONWY
I have
not fished this beat yet this season as the only times
I have been up to Llyn Diwaunedd it has been raining
heavily. We are being asked for reports to put in
Trout and Salmon, so if any of our members have
fished please provide some feedback.
LLYN
DIWAUNEDD
My
favourite Stillwater and unfortunately I have only
visited the place three times this season. I hope to
get there at least once again before the end of the
season. This is the place for wild brown trout on
traditional wet flies. You have to keep on the move
as the place is not stuffed with foraging stockies.
Early in the season a Black Pennel is usually
successful and by mid-season the Mallard and Claret
and Bibio start to come into their own. When the fry
are out there is little to be Alexandra. The larger
fish tend to be on the car park side of the smaller
of the two sections of the lake.
That concludes my
brief report and may I remind you all to submit your
catch returns. It would also be nice if members
e-mailed me or the webmaster with any river comments
or news. I will happily include this in any future
news letters or get it added to our website. Feel
free to e-mail photographs of your latest catch.
Regards,
Paul Hughes.
